Bonus: Community College Courses Can Give You an Edge

If you have exhausted the most rigorous courses at your high school, or if your school has limited advanced offerings, taking courses at a local community college is one of the most powerful moves a UC applicant can make. This is known as concurrent enrollment or dual enrollment, and it sends a strong signal to UC admissions readers that you are ready for college-level academic work.

There are two important benefits to know:

Respond right away through whatever process the colleges uses (portal, email or form) and confirm that you want to remain on the waitlist.

2. Send a Letter of Continued Interest - if the College accepts one.

This is your chance to stay on the school’s radar.

Write a thoughtful letter of continued interest (often called a LOCI) that:

Let’s take a closer look at what really happens next.

Step 1: Counselor Submissions and Brag Sheets

Once a student hits submit, their part of the application may be done — but the school’s part has just begun. Colleges require an official school report and a counselor recommendation for every applicant.

Before counselors can send those materials, most schools require students to complete a brag sheet or counselor packet . Stay Positive: It may be difficult to stay positive when you are deferred, but it's important to keep in mind that college admissions offices consider many factors and deferred applications do not necessarily mean your application won’t receive a positive outcome. Although you may never know why you were deferred, it does not mean you were denied.

Regular Decision vs. Early Decision

Are you deciding whether to apply Regular Decision or Early Decision (ED)?

Several students want to apply Early Decision when they compare admission rates between Early Decision and Regular Decision. Schools are more likely to accept students that WILL attend their university. Likewise, finding out where you are going to school in December is appealing to most high school students. But before you apply ED here are the questions to ask yourself.

1. Are you a student who has done extensive research into many colleges, has made several campus visits (in person or virtually) and has found your dream school? If you are sure you want to attend a certain university, ED is a way to show that school is your first choice and you will attend if given the opportunity.

2. Are you a student who will need to compare the financial aid offers of several colleges? If you will need to compare financial aid packages, Regular Decision is your best option. However, if your family is not applying for financial aid ED is a great option

3. Is your application complete? Meaning would your senior first semester grades improve your application? Are your test scores where you want them? Although a majority of schools are test-optional this year, would a higher test score that you took in December improve your application? Are you happy with all your extracurriculars or do you need a few more months to improve your resume? Are you working on a research project that you need time to complete? If you are happy with your grades, scores and activities by October, ED may be for you. But if you need more time to beef up your application, Regular Decision may be your best bet.

Writing your college essay can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be. Over the years, I’ve helped hundreds of students find their voice, reflect on their experiences, and craft personal statements that truly represent who they are.

Whether you’re just starting out or stuck in the middle of a draft, here are four practical suggestions to help you move forward with confidence:

1. Just Start

The hardest part is often getting started. Many students overthink their essay before writing a single word. To break through that block, I give my students a simple first assignment: write about something that happened today. No pressure. No fancy vocabulary. Just write the way you talk.

This quick exercise helps students realize they can write — and that it doesn’t have to be perfect right away. Once you’ve chosen a potential essay topic, set a timer for ten minutes and start writing. If it doesn’t flow, you’ve only lost ten minutes. If it does? You’re on your way.

2. Use Your Natural Voice

Admissions officers want to hear from you. Not your English teacher. Not your parents. Not ChatGPT. Your essay should sound like something you’d say out loud — thoughtful, reflective, and real.

Be careful not to over-edit or collect feedback from too many people. Too many voices can dilute your own. Stick to one or two trusted readers — maybe your counselor or an English teacher who knows you well — and make sure the final version still sounds like you.

3. Show Them What They Can’t Already See

Think of your essay as the one part of your application where you can tell the admissions team something they won’t find anywhere else. They already have your grades, test scores, and activity list. What they don’t have is a clear sense of your personality — how you think, what matters to you, and how you move through the world.

What would your friends or family say makes you you? Are you the one who plans every group hangout? The person who checks in on others when they’re having a tough day? The sibling who takes charge when things go sideways? Find those personal traits and weave them into your story.

If you’re not sure where to start, ask your parents or someone who knows you well. You might be surprised by the insights they offer.

4. Embrace the Editing Process

Writing is rewriting. Your first draft is just the beginning — a chance to get your thoughts out. With each round of editing, your essay becomes more focused and powerful.

Once you’ve got a solid draft, step away for a day or two, then come back with fresh eyes. Ask yourself: Does this sound like me? Does it reflect who I am? If someone else read it, would they know I wrote it?

And of course, polish your grammar, punctuation, and structure. When you’re ready for feedback, choose someone whose opinion you trust. They’ll help ensure your essay is not only well-written but also aligned with your goals.
